The journal is published by the International Society of Arboriculture, whose mission is to foster a greater appreciation for trees and to promote the research, technology, and practice of professional arboriculture. Arboriculture & Urban Forestry , ISA's scientific journal, aims to advance the scholarship of civic science in urban forestry through the curation of a special issue focusing on engaging the public in data collection, knowledge production, and stewardship as they pertain to urban forestry. Citizen science has been gaining prominence in urban forestry in the past decade, with municipalities and nonprofits engaging volunteers in tree data collection. Related forms of public engagement have also brought diverse stakeholders into the fold of knowledge production and stewardship of urban greenspaces, including participatory research and civic ecology. These varied approaches, while they have different disciplinary foundations, all connect as a means of engaging the public in the study and management of urban trees: what we refer to here as civic science in urban forestry. There is a need for basic research about the conceptual frameworks of civic engagement in urban forest research, empirical evidence about best practices for applying citizen science, and other participatory approaches to research and practice, and impacts of volunteering on the participants themselves.
